The aim of the article is to present the current situation of the non-governmental sector (NGOs) in terms of dimension of the sector, structure and dynamic. After 20 years of development we have now in Romania a mature NGO sector, counting more then 62 000 registred entities, out of which 21 319 entities are active (meaning having a fiscal record showing organizational activity). Within this sector we have analysed the situation of the NGOs active in social services, in terms of structure, dynamic and type of activities. According to recent data from 2010 provided by the Ministry of Labor, Family and Social Protection, we have in Romania 2376 accredited social services providers, out of each 49% are NGOs. In the article, we are looking to the policy framework supporting and encouraging the development of the nonprofit private social services providers in Romania, in the context on a incipient welfare mix system, with limited public-private partnership experiences.
