The theme of this article focuses on two topics less addressed in Romania: offences committed by students, for which prison sentences have been issued, and copying mechanisms through access to university studies by prisoners, from the perspective of the importance of education in their rehabilitation and reintegration into society. The exploratory inquiry focused on two distinct categories of individuals: students who, following a conviction, ended up in detention and prisoners who, although they had no intention of pursuing university studies before incarceration, chose to make sense of their time in prison and become students. The working paradigm was based on the sociological theory of conflict, through the filter of which student criminality is interpreted as a destabilizing factor to be removed from society, as opposed to structural functionalism, which proposes resilience and integration into society. From the second perspective, education represents one of the essential pillars of human life, providing the ability to respond adaptively to the difficulties encountered in detention and the opportunity for personal development and growth. The findings may support the development of intervention programs or courses of action aimed at reducing offending and increasing resilience, with the ability to be addressed in both the academic and the prison system.
