Prior to moving into social work education at Paisley University in the early 1990s, I worked for many years as a community worker, area team social worker, single parent groupworker, practice teacher and Mental Health Officer in different parts of the West of Scotland.I moved to Stirling University in 2001, where my current teaching and research interests are in the areas of mental health, international social work, neo-liberalism and social work, and radical/Marxist approaches to social work, both nationally and internationally.
I am a member of the Organising Committee of the annual Social Work Action Network Conferences and, with Chris Jones, Michael Lavalette and Laura Penketh, one of the authors of the Manifesto for Social Work and Social Justice (www.socialworkfuture.org).
I am a Research Associate of the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa (www.wits.ac.za)
