This paper focuses on authenticity understood as the quality of being authentic, i.e. relating to or denoting an emotionally appropriate, significant, purposive, and responsible mode of human life, distinguishing it from authenticity understood as the quality of being authentic, i.e. of undisputed origin and not a copy, genuine. It presents various aspects of authenticity in literature from 1957 to day, with emphasis on authenticity in social work and, implicitly, on authentic social workers, without ignoring boundary issues that may turn an authentic social worker into an inauthentic social worker. The most important components of being an authentic social worker are analysed in detail: trust and trustworthiness, belief and believability, support, truth, faith, honesty, and reliability.
